White child with red curls stomps through a forest under a colourful blankie. Woodland creatures above and below the ground.

by Cori Doerrfeld

Finn is in a furious grump. Grandpa wants to chat. Finn refuses. Grandpa wouldn’t understand, Finn insists. Grandpas asks if, instead, they can take a walk together. Finn concedes, but only if they can stay under their blankie. And so, they go out in to the forest. As they walk through, passing all sorts of animals and plant life, Grandpa gets Finn to imagine the world beneath everything and everyone, including those  beneath and inside people. “Sometimes”, he says, “beneath someone who looks as if they wouldn’t understand is someone who knows exactly how you feel”. A double page spread shows the two facing each other with matching broken hearts. And then they move on. Together.

A moving story which explores our depths of feelings in the simplest of ways while encouraging us to surface them. A final, easy-to-miss, back cover image suggests Finn and Grandpa have lost their beloved ‘Gramma’. From the creator of The Rabbit Listened, this is an artist who really tunes in to the ways young children experience emotions. Age 4-7, Hardback 32pp
